Tests

PRIOR REQUIREMENTS TO THE TESTS

Blood Test

To perform the test:
• You must present yourself at the laboratory between 8 to 9 am or at the time agreed. Stay calm; the extraction does not carry any risk. Infom the analyst if you are taking anticoagulant drugs such as Sintrom, Warfarina, Aspirin, AAS or others.
• As general rule, you must be fasting at least 8 hours before the analysis. For lipemia controls (cholesterol, triglycerides…) better be fasting from 10 to 12 hours. There are blood tests that don’t require to be fasting; consult it before with the analyst.
• You can always drink water.

You must consider:
• If you are taking a chronic medicine, you can take it at the same time you do it regularly, with the exception of specific cases that you will have previously consulted. However, inform it to the analyst before the extraction.
• If the patient is under the age of 18, it must come with the adult in charge. Under the age of 5, he or she must be accompanied by two adults, preferably the mother and the father or another relative for the child’s reassure.
• If you have the menstruation, let the analyst know it when you deliver the sample.
• In the case of functional tests (O’Sullivan test, glycaemia curve…), you should make a prior appointment.
• If you also need analysis of urine, fimmunochromatographic method or other types of samples, you can bring the samples the day of the blood test.

You should bring:
• The analysis prescription.
• If you have a mutual insurance, you will have to present the mutual card before the extraction.
• If your mutual insurance requires an authorisation, you will also have to present it.

Fecal Occult Blood Test

In accordance with the Government of Catalonia’s Early Detection of Colon and Rectum Cancer Programme recommendations, our laboratory performs the test for fecal occult blood –based on the immunochromatographic method–, which recognises specifically the presence of human hemoglobin.

To perform the test:
• Collect 3 samples of consecutive feces in 3 containers. They are valid whether they are collected the same day or during a week. The test doesn’t need a lot of feces; it’s enough with a walnut size sample.
• Keep the 3 wrapped samples in the refrigerator.

You must consider:
• Don’t perform the test if you have hemorrhoids or the menstruation. To take the samples, wait 3 days without any blood lost.
• Avoid the contamination of the feces samples with urine.
• It’s not necessary to be fasting nor follow any diet before collecting the samples.
• Taking medication does NOT interfere with the test.

Recent Urine Test

To perform the test:
• You should have a sterile container, which can be purchased at any pharmacy or at the laboratory.
• Wash your hands with soap and water.
• Wash your genitals with soap and water. Women should do it from the front to the back, separating the lips from the vulva. • Wash with plenty of water.
• Begin to urinate in the container, trying not to collect the first stream.
• Close the container, ensuring the correct closure.
• Bring the sample to the laboratory as soon as possible.
• If you have the menstruation, let the analyst know it when you deliver the sample.

24 Hours Urine Test

To perform the test:
• You should have a sterile 2 liter container, which can be purchased at any pharmacy.
• You should think carefully which day will be convenient to collect all the urine of the day. The day you decide to collect all the urine, you will NOT store the first urine of the day.
• From this time you have to collect all the urine that is made directly into the 2 liter container. The container must be kept in the refrigerator. It is very important not to forget to collect any urine during the day.
• It is possible that you need more than one bottle.
• The next day, you will have to collect the first first urine to close the 24 hours of urine collection.
• Bring the urine to the laboratory as soon as possible.
• If you have the menstruation, let the analyst know it when you deliver the sample
